FUSS let’s you know where surgery can take you in the future!

On Wednesday 22nd September, the Flinders University Surgical Society will hold its inaugural Surgical Careers Night at Adelaide’s finest conference venue, the Hilton International Hotel, Adelaide.

This marquee event will be a unique opportunity to hear from the top surgeons practicing in South Australia from a wide variety of surgical fields. Speakers will provide us with an insight into their life as a surgeon whilst also focusing on new and upcoming techniques within their specialties.

As one of the largest events ever run by students of the Flinders Medical School, we hope to accommodate as many of you as possible for this high-quality education evening. A major highlight will be the trade exhibition running concurrently to the academic program throughout the night. This will provide students with the opportunity to chat with representatives from some of Australia’s biggest medical and surgical companies, and thanks to these sponsors, there will be a huge number of prizes and freebies to be given away.

Students will have the chance to win suture kits, several textbooks (including the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery), signed copies of Craig Jurisevic’s autobiography, ‘Blood on my Hands’, and many other great prizes.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, this night will be FREE for all FUSS members. This includes an exquisite buffet dinner for all attendees, a FREE registration pack (including all the information you need to apply for surgery), an attendee show-bag full of great goodies, and access to the trade exhibition.

This night is not just for students who are determined to become surgeons, but also for those who want to learn more about what surgery has to offer as a career. The list of speakers is as follows:

- Professor Rob Pabdury (Hepatobilary surgery, FMC)
- Professor Guy Maddern (Academic surgery, RAH)
- Dr Peter Devitt (Upper GI, RAH)
- Associate Professor John Greenwood (Plastic surgery, RAH)
- Dr Jayme Bennetts (Cardiothoracic surgery, FMC)
- Dr Matthew McDonald (Neurosurgery, FMC)
- Dr Christopher Kirby (Paediatric surgery, FMC)
- Dr Nicholas Wallwork (Orthopaedic surgery, FMC)

ONLINE Registration will open in September, but stay tuned for further information in the coming weeks on our biggest event of the year. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please forward them to Michael De Sciscio (desc0003@flinders.edu.au). We look forward to seeing you on this very important night.

Flinders University Surgical Society presents the FUSS Gloving and Gowning Workshop:

There is one crucial link between being a medical student and being a doctor- exams. Similarly there is one crucial link between being on the wards and being in theatre- scrubbing up.

You all know how to pass exams and with the help of the FUSS Gloving and Gowning Workshop you will learn how to scrub up for theatre with the help of surgeons and theatre nurses.

On the 5th of August, be ready to learn surgical asepsis, theatre etiquette and give you a chance to put your dexterity to the test by having a practical session with supervision from experts.

Gloving and Gowning skills are essential on surgical rotations and this workshop will give you early exposure to an essential skill and give you a rare opportunity to practice gloving and gowning with guidance. Knowledge of this science will allow you to take up opportunities to view and assist in surgery at earlier stages of your career.

FUSS recommends to Research, your options!

FUSS is proud to offer a list of researchers who have a focus on surgery!  What a great opportunity to spruce up your CV, start networking, or even start planning what you’ll do if that terrifying MD program comes to be!  Feel free to contact these researchers to indicate your interest in pursuing research.  Understand that it may take a while for them to get back to you and even longer to set up research.  For those of you in third year, try and plan your fourth research 6 months in advance.

Here’s a good guide to writing the first email.

  • Check PubMed to see what work they’ve done recently, see if it interests you
  • Introduction, who you are and what you’re studying
  • Indicate interest in pursuing research
  • Talk briefly about your background in research, what skills you have (especially important for lab based research)
  • Mention any areas of interest you have currently, especially if it overlaps with what they’re doing
  • Talk about what you realistically want to accomplish (a single paper and not designed and running a randomized double blind study!)
  • Give an idea of the amount of time you have to offer and for how long (eg. 3 hours/week for a year)
  • Offer several times you are free to meet, they’re busier than you

If you have any questions or just want me to proof read your email feel free to email me (haia0001).  If you’re having trouble getting a response, make an appointment with their secretary or talk to me.
